Workshop Summary

The first U.S.-Taiwan workshop on "Extreme Precipitation and Weather" was held in Taipei, Taiwan from 29-31 April 2015 supported by Taiwan's Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). The 1st workshop was held with two other bi-lateral workshops (U.S.-Taiwan Geoscience Workshop and Bilateral Photonics Workshop) to promote scientific collaboration between U.S. and Taiwan's scientists in a few mutually interested topics, including Severe Weather, Mountain Building, and Photonics. I

During the first workshop, a plan was developed to hold a follow-on second workshop in the U.S. to further scientific collaboration. Honolulu, Hawaii was selected as the location for the workshop due to its central location between the U.S. mainland and Taiwan, and similar vulnerability to extreme weather as a mountainous tropical island in the Pacific. The East-West Center on the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus is an ideal venue for the workshop, as this Center is dedicated to promoting better relations and understanding across the Pacific.

The local organizers are Professor Yi-Leng Chen, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of Hawaii at Manoa and Professor Michael Bell, Department of Atmospheric Science, Colorado State University. Professors Ming-Jen Yang and Jen Pin Chen, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, National Taiwan University are coordinating the Taiwan participation in the workshop.
