Multi-Agency Supported Programs

As science develops there is a need for the support and hosting of unique, often interagency-sponsored programs, that focus on specific national research efforts. CPAESS acts as a neutral convener to create a home and support for such programs so that they can continue to develop and make outstanding contributions to science.  We work with numerous funders wishing to contribute to these scientific missions and manage the resulting programs, enabling them to incubate, innovate, and grow.

US Climate Variability and Predictability Program (US CLIVAR)

US CLIVAR is a multi­agency-funded national research program investigating the variability and predictability of the global climate system on seasonal, interannual, decadal, and centennial timescales, with a particular emphasis on the role of the ocean and its interaction with other parts of the Earth system. As the ocean plays a key role in providing a major long-term "memory" for the climate system, generating or enhancing variability on a range of climatic timescales. Understanding the ocean's role in climate variability is therefore crucial for quantifying and harnessing the predictability inherent to the Earth system. US CLIVAR-led research has played a substantial role in advancing understanding of, and skill in predicting climate variability and change.

U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program

The U.S. Carbon Cycle Science Program is a community-focused program that develops and implements multidisciplinary initiatives to advance carbon cycle science priorities across terrestrial, atmospheric, oceanic, and societal dimensions and serves as an information source for research, observing and modeling communities through increased engagement between the research, federal agency partners and the stakeholder communities. Its mission is to improve understanding of the global carbon cycle, including the impacts of increasing greenhouse gas emissions on climate, ecosystem health, and society; to develop science-based information and resources to support policy-making and management; and to communicate findings broadly among national and international scientific and user communities.
