At the end of January and the beginning of February, Baltimore hosted the 2024 American Meteorological Society’s Annual Meeting and CPAESS was there. We always have a wonderful time sharing opportunities at the Early Career Fair, meeting staff and sponsors as they present their latest research to the community, helping out at the UCAR | NCAR Booth, and this year we had the additional bonus of having our Deputy Director Cindy Bruyère be a recipient of an AMS Fellowship!

Before the conference formally begins, AMS has an Early Career Fair which includes two evening tabling events. Kate Rodd and Dawn Mullally of the CPAESS business office staffed the UCAR NCAR booth to share the many educational opportunities that CPAESS provides for young scientists and employment opportunities, along with information about, our many federal partners,  and UCAR | NCAR in general.

CPAESS Specialist Kate Rodd, who oversees our fellowships and summer school said, “It is a positive and productive experience being involved with the AMS Student Career Fair. I love to hear what the students are studying and helping them find the right opportunity to advance their education and career.” These outreach efforts continually bear wonderful fruit in terms of being able to reach our audience in person. This year our NOAA Explorer In Training Program for NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration had 930 applicants. So we seize these opportunities whenever we can.

Our own SPS | CPAESS Deputy Director Dr. Cindy Bruyère was also acknowledged by the American Meteorological Society as one of its 2024 Fellows. This award recognizes “outstanding individuals and organizations of the weather, water, and climate community” (AMS). Cindy’s skills span both leadership and research. She was the Director for the Capacity Center for Climate and Weather Extremes (C3WE) at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). She was the 2020-2021 Scientific and Engineering Leadership Fellow for the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), and she is a Research Fellow at the North-West University, South Africa. She holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Management and an MSc in Dynamical and Numerical Weather Modeling. Congratulations on this new acknowledgment of your hard work and research. We are super proud of you.

In addition to meeting with our sponsors and so many of our wonderful co-workers and fellows, CPAESS was represented with numerous oral presentations and poster sessions. These included the following talks:

CPAESS staff also assisted with the UCAR | NCAR Booth and had a table at UCAR | NCAR’s Community Reception at the Baltimore Aquarium. It was another wonderful experience connecting with CPAESS staff and partners from across the country, while extending our many educational opportunities to the Earth system science community.
